CHAPTER SEVENTEEN

While they were eating breakfast, the announcement came on that all passengers would need to disembark and head to the private island. Callan and the others tried to act like they were excited, laughing and teasing one another about their pink flamingo floaties and swaths of white sunscreen on their noses.

When only two boats were used to gather passengers, they all realized that the numbers were lower than they originally believed. Besides Juliette, there were only three other women in the group. Hiro immediately sent that information to the team, along with the number of males.

Landing on the beach at the island, the staff, which they knew were not staff, didn’t even pretend to give a shit. No one helped the passengers off, and once they were off, they simply pointed to a grouping of umbrellas. A small hut advertising food and drinks was beneath several palm trees. One young man was inside, smiling at the group as they walked up.

The moment the last passenger was off, the boats took off, not even giving a time frame of when they might return. The passengers stared at one another, unsure of what to do.

“This is ridiculous,” said one man. “I’m going to ask for our money back. This is positively the worst cruise ever.”

“You have no idea how right you are,” said Callan. “Greg? See what the little dick in the shack knows. He might actually be staff, but we can’t be sure.” Greg nodded, walking toward the young man.

“Listen to me,” said Callan. “We are all in a lot of danger.”

“What are you talking about?” asked another man.

“Hear me out.” He spent the next twenty minutes telling them what they’d encountered. Others had experienced or seen the same things but were unsure if the flu bug was really the reason. When Greg walked back with the server, he was in tears.

“I didn’t know,” he said, shaking his head. “It was an easy gig. They told me I’d get five grand if I just served drinks and food. I didn’t have to do anything on the ship except sleep and play video games.”

“Do you have a walkie-talkie or any form of communication with them?” asked Callan.

“No, they said they’d be back by dark and that I should make sure you’re all right on the beach.” Greg frowned, staring at Callan.

“What now?” he asked.

Juliette stared up at the sky and smiled. The others heard what she heard, then turned to stare at the three huge helicopters landing on the beach. Men seemed to pour from her doors. Dressed in surf shorts or bathing trunks with wild prints. Some were shirtless, but all had weapons draped around their bodies with a large backpack on their arms.

“What in the holy hell is that?” asked one of the passengers.

“They are your saviors,” grinned Juliette. She spotted her father and took off running. “Daddy!” Leaping into Whiskey’s arms, he kissed his daughter’s face, holding her tightly to his body.

“Christ, I was terrified for you,” he mumbled.
